Alameda is a fascinating place. Once a peninsula and now an island this photo-illustrated book will enrich the experiences of visitors and residents when exploring what was once called “The Encinal.” We’ll take you back in time to the first residents, the Ohlone People and then turn the pages of history all the way up to present day. You’ll read about the formation of the early townships, the land squabbles, the diversity of ethnic groups, early industries, the incredible WWII Naval Air Station, and the massive landfill operations that more than doubled Alameda in size.
Since the City of Alameda also includes Coast Guard Island, Bay Farm Island and Ballena Isle there’s a short chapter on these nearby islands. Did you know Coast Guard Island was man-made as was much of Bay Farm Island? Although Alameda is an urban environment it is surrounded and critically influenced by the San Francisco Bay. So you’ll find a chapter on the Bay’s natural history. There is much wildlife to be seen while strolling or biking along Alameda’s shoreline and the more you learn, the more you discover, and the more you are intrigued.
In order to facilitate your exploration there are two chapters with self-guided tours. Some of these are walking or biking tours and there’s also driving tours. These specific tours will cover historic buildings, stunning Victorian era homes, varioius landmarks and areas of historic significance like downtown Park Street, Crab Cove and the Naval Air Station. Maps throughout the book will help guide you.
There’s also a chapter that includes stories, celebrities and movies related to Alameda. The final chapter is a resource section giving you information about museums, antique fairs, and other places of interest like the Doug Siden Visitors Center. So get comfortable, read up and then go out and explore. I hope you enjoy!
